The National SEND Audit 2023-24

Welcome to the SEND Leadership Audit tool for schools (mainstream and special), colleges and Alternative Provision. We hope that this tool will help to assess your setting’s strengths and areas for development across 7 key areas of SEND leadership. This is also your opportunity to contribute to national policy and get a national report on SEND Provision and Leadership across the country.
Since Phase 1 in October 2023, we have shared our findings with influencers and key agents of change.  Many (like FED, CST, GovNet and Hays Education UK, to name a few) have come on board to support wider participation.  Phase 2 took place from 29th January to 15th March and NOW this final Phase 3 form 2023-24 will be open till 28th June.   Ultimately, completing the SENCD Audit at setting level is about improving provision for children and young people - knowing your strengths and areas for growth, with suggested recommendations to help you. Phase 3 is particularly useful to feed into the end of year accountability report, known as the SEN Information Report (regulation 51), as well as help settings plan for 2024-2025.  There is no charge for using the SEND Audit during Phase 3 (2023-24) and in addition to the bespoke reports that settings receive, we can provide MAT-wide reports too.

How to complete the SEND audit 2023-24

The audit comprises 7 sections, each containing 10 statements. For optimal results, we recommend the head teacher or principal collaborates with the designated special educational needs and disability lead (SENCO). Rate each statement with a RAG (Red, Amber, Green) designation:

Red:
Not Evident
Amber:
Developing
Green:
Secure

Beneath each statement, find the symbol. Click it to provide your RAG rating rationale and attach evidence. While the evidence won't be in the summary report, it's valuable for discussions with governors, trustees, and regulatory bodies. Where the statement includes (S) this refers to Statutory Requirements.

If your setting completed Phase 1 and/or 2 of the SEND Audit in 2023-24, we would encourage you to engage with Phase 3 to record any improvements or changes. This is an effective way of recording progress and evidence of aspirational change for any inspectorate. If you have not completed the SEND Audit previously, you can undertake Phase 3 and count this as your benchmark data.

Tailoring the Audit to your context

We understand that applying a single audit across diverse settings is challenging. If a statement seems irrelevant, use your best judgment to align it with your context. For instance, both mainstream and special schools prioritize high-quality teaching, albeit with variations. "Pupil" or "learner" denotes students, even those in Post 16 education.

Honesty and collaboration

Our experience shows that candid, authentic responses achieved through collaboration yield the most impactful results. Embrace the opportunity to foster improvement and drive your next steps.

Data for Central Teams of a Multi Academy Trust (MAT)

If all settings in your MAT take part in the SEND Audit (Phase 2) drop us an email to Ben Barton and in the final analysis, we will pull out a MAT-wide report and send this to you.

Parents /carers

If you have concerns about how SEND is led in your’ child / children’s setting, encourage the leadership team to undertake the SEND Audit by sharing the link. We have case studies, where parents triggered this and completing Phase 1 by leaders led to some useful conversations around development and growth.
